The survey redesign gained employers and lost the question about harm

The 2025 National Return to Work Survey redesign added employers for the first time and removed the question asking injured workers whether returning to work had hindered their recovery. One headline indicator was discontinued and four more now carry comparability warnings, at the mid-point of a ten-year strategy.

Work kills far fewer Australians than in 2003. It disables about as many.

Years of life lost to occupational exposures fell 42 per cent per 1,000 workers between 2003 and 2024. Years lived with disability barely moved. By our arithmetic on Safe Work Australia’s figures, 88 per cent of the improvement in total burden came from the fatal side, and disability is now exactly double the years of life lost.

Retail and hospitality workers get hurt and do not claim. Safe Work Australia has put numbers on why

The new profile of 2.3 million sales and service workers: 46 per cent casual against 22, body stressing at 40.8 per cent of serious claims, and the costliest body stressing claims coming from repetitive light work rather than lifting. Underneath it, a claim-to-injury gap that says the claims file understates the harm in these industries, with the regulator’s own reasons why.

Queensland publishes a safety rate for every mine. For most of them it measures size

The state publishes serious accident and high potential incident frequency rates for each individual mine and quarry, which almost no other regulator does. Across 1,637 site-years the median site works about 15,500 hours, so one serious accident becomes a rate of 65, against 0.23 for the same event at the largest site. Why the rate columns cannot be compared, and what we deliberately did not print.
