A 25-year-old worker died in a boom lift at North Blackburn in August 2023. WorkSafe found the operator protection alarm disconnected and no spotter in use. The owner was fined $400,000 for having no pre-start inspection system; the company whose technician serviced the lift that morning was fined $230,000 for not identifying the fault. Two duties that did not overlap.
Enforcement
42 prosecutions since 2021 for more than $1.4 million, and WorkSafe Victoria says the vast majority followed an inspector seeing an unprotected worker rather than an injury. A data tool now turns Solar Victoria installer notifications into inspection leads, and the regulator can suspend an operator from the Solar Homes Program.
Jurisdiction
